John joined the RAF straight from school and spent his first 18 months of aircrew training in Proctors, Ansons and Lancasters, (a clue to his age), and the next 8 years flying very happily in the back end of all three marks of the Shackleton. - despite the fact that the aircraftt frightened its crews far more than it ever did the enemy.
On leaving the RAF he trained as a boatbuilder in Norfolk, spending the next 40 years building a huge variety of boats and the last 30 of these years running his own successful boatbuilding business.
Despite his interest in boats, his lifelong passion has always been flying. He has held a fixed wing licence since 1971 and also holds pilot’s licences to fly sea planes, hot air balloons and, of course, gyros.
He flew an autogyro for the first time some four years ago and was so smitten with the experience that he went straight out and bought one.
He has 600+ hours flying his autogyro, and over 10,000 total flying hours in his various log books. Of all the flying machines John is qualified to fly , the autogyro is his favourite by some way, followed by seaplanes, hot air balloons and fixed wing - in that order.
Now retired, John lives in Gorleston on Sea, in Norfolk
