The pilot can couple the engine to the rotor blades to pre-rotate to approximately two thirds of the speed needed for flight. Once this rotor speed is achieved, the pre-rotator is disconnected and the gyro is accelerated gently down the runway, forcing more air through the blades until they are turning sufficiently fast to provide the lift to fly.
The pilot and passenger are well protected from the wind by individual windscreens, with the passenger sitting slightly higher than the pilot. On warm summer days, John flies in normal light clothing; in colder weather he dons a sheepskin flying jacket and his gyro is fitted with regulators for heated gloves and socks for really cold days.
The view from the cockpit is, of course, fantastic.
